Denmark Extends Temporary Border Control with Germany
On June 12, 2026, the Danish Minister of Justice announced the extension of temporary border controls with Germany for an additional four months. This decision was communicated to the European Commission, citing a persistent and serious threat to Denmark's security.
The temporary border control, initially extended in April 2026 for a two-month period from May 12 to July 11, 2026, was set to expire. However, due to ongoing security concerns, the Danish authorities have deemed it necessary to prolong the measures. The new extension will be in effect from July 12 to November 11, 2026.
Justice Minister Nicolai Wammen emphasized the gravity of the current security situation, stating, "The security situation at home is serious, and we continue to see a terror and sabotage threat directed at Denmark. Therefore, it is important that we have border control with Germany. On this basis, we are now extending the temporary border control with Germany, so we continue to provide the police with the right tools in the fight against cross-border crime."
The extension aligns with Denmark's commitment to ensuring national security and combating cross-border criminal activities. The government has assured that the measures will be implemented in accordance with Schengen regulations and in close cooperation with German authorities to minimize disruptions for travelers and trade.
