On December 10, 1898, the Vaudois Bar Association was formally constituted as an association, in application of the cantonal law then in force. Initially and until 1902, any lawyer registered on the roll was automatically part of the Order as an active member. Since the entry into force of the Swiss Civil Code (CC) in 1912, the Vaudois Bar Association has been an association, within the meaning of articles 60 et seq. CC, whose head office is in Lausanne. The Vaud Bar Association has thus been, since its creation, a private association and not a public law corporation as may exist in other Swiss cantons (Jura in particular) or other States (in France for example). Since then, the Order has brought together in association the vast majority of lawyers registered with the Vaud bar. The history of the Vaudois Bar Association was recently the subject of the very comprehensive work entitled “Vaudois Bar Order: 120 years between tradition and justice”, by Christophe Vuilleumier, published by Papers etc.
