Safiya is a passionate criminal defense lawyer committed to achieving the best possible outcomes for her clients.
Since being called to the bar, Safiya has practiced at Caramanna, Friedberg LLP. She previously completed her articling at Cooper, Sandler, Shime, and Schwartzentruber, where she worked on several high-profile cases, including those involving organized crime and regulatory matters.
Safiya completed a dual-degree program at the University of Windsor, earning a degree in both American and Canadian law. During her law studies, she worked as a research assistant for the Dean of the Faculty of Law at Windsor, where she examined Indigenous land claims. She also volunteered her time with Pro Bono Students Canada as the program coordinator for the "Pot Pardons Project," which facilitates the expungement of criminal records for members of the Windsor community. Safiya was an avid contributor to her law school's journal and was awarded the Social Justice Scholarship for her commitment to advancing access to justice.
Safiya has a background in politics and policy. Before studying law, she worked tirelessly as a speechwriter on Parliament Hill, where she studied the Cannabis Act and the impact that its mandatory minimum sentences would have on racialized Canadians. She earned her Bachelor of Arts (with honors) in Law and Legal Studies from Carleton University.
She is a member of the Law Society of Ontario, the Criminal Lawyers' Association, and the Women in Canadian Criminal Defence Association.
