Jan specializes in environmental law in its broadest sense, including regulatory law (chemicals, electrical devices, hazardous substances, etc.), climate change, emission rights and renewable energy, EIA, waste and soil management, water, air, and nature conservation at all levels (international, European, and Belgian). He also has extensive expertise in project development, permitting, urban planning and zoning, expropriation, and nuclear law.
Jan has significant experience drafting, amending, and interpreting laws and regulations for public authorities at the federal and regional levels. He also handles cases related to human rights (ECHR), constitutional law, and general administrative law.
He is the author of numerous publications in his areas of expertise and regularly speaks at seminars and conferences.
Jan serves on the board of several Flemish associations, including the Vlaamse Vereniging voor Omgevingsrecht (VVOR, Association for Environmental and Urban Planning Law) and the Stichting Behoud Natuur en Leefmilieu Vlaanderen (SBNLV, Foundation for Nature and Environmental Conservation in Flanders). He is also a member of the editorial boards of legal journals such as Chroniques de Droit Public – Publiekrechtelijke Kronieken CDPK (Public Law Chronicles), Tijdschrift voor Ruimtelijke Ordening en Stedenbouw (TROS, Flemish Journal on Zoning and Urban Planning), and Tijdschrift voor Stedenbouw, Omgeving, Ruimtelijke Ordening en Milieu (STORM, Journal on Environment, Zoning, and Urban Development).
Jan graduated in law from Ghent University in 1989 and in European law from the Free University of Brussels in 1990. He joined Stibbe’s Brussels office in 1994.
