The legacy of Al Wakeel dates back to 1981, when the eminent lawyer Othman Sheikh Khalid began his career as a lawyer and legal advisor in the city of Sulaimani in the Iraqi Kurdistan region. Since that day, Al Wakeel has remained the leading law firm in the market, providing high-level legal services to individuals and institutions seeking the best.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Othman Sheikh Khalid and his team proved to be the best lawyers and advisors in law, civil law, national insurance regulation, property law, inheritance regulation, and agrarian reform law, not only in Kurdistan but also throughout Iraq. Othman Sheikh Khalid handled hundreds of lawsuits and won the overwhelming majority. Not only as a lawyer, but sometimes as an arbitrator, he resolved many prolonged conflicts. Considered the dean of law in the Kurdistan region and in Iraq, Othman Sheikh Khalid trained hundreds of young lawyers and paved the way for them to become successful lawyers, prosecutors, and judges. When Othman Sheikh Khalid was appointed prosecutor in 1997, Handren Othman Sheikh Khalid replaced him in the law firm. In early 2006, Al Wakeel was registered as one of the first legal expertise companies in Iraq.
